Asbestos is commonly present in a large variety of building materials and structures. Building owners and contractors routinely encounter asbestos-containing material (ACM) during demolition and renovation projects. Most often these materials will require asbestos removal or asbestos abatement. ACMs can be found in roof flashings, drywall joint compound, plaster, roof shingles, adhesives, ductwork and floor or ceiling tiles. ACMs can also be found in certain types of roof decking materials. Once encountered and it’s determined that the materials must be removed the project must undergo a complete asbestos abatement program.

If it is determined that you have asbestos containing materials in your home or building you may choose to leave the material alone. As long as the material are not disturbed, and are in good condition they are not dangerous the asbestos abatement is not required. Once these materials are disturbed they can release harmful asbestos fibers in the air where they can be inhaled, at this point the asbestos containing materials must be removed.

When the asbestos containing material must be removed Absolute Home Solutions has the experience and trained removal specialists to perform the asbestos removal. Asbestos is closely regulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency as well as the US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Act. These agencies regulate how to remove, handle and dispose of asbestos. Absolute Home Solutions carefully performs asbestos abatement under the proper regulatory guidelines. We also adhere to asbestos removal, and asbestos abatement, containment and disposal regulations.

One of the first steps in determining whether or not you need asbestos abatement begins with proper testing of suspected asbestos containing materials. For approved testing labs you may visit the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program maintains a Directory of Accredited Laboratories. When using the directory is important to be aware of the effective dates of accreditation and to verify the laboratory has complied with its accreditation at the time the testing services are provided.

In most cases Asbestos abatement requires permitting by your local building department or environmental department. In many cases a separate permit is required for Asbestos abatement and your renovation or demolition permit. The Asbestos Abatement permitting program ensures that asbestos removal service contractors will protect themselves as well as the general consumer. The program is specifically designed to protect the health, and safety of the building occupants.

The function of the asbestos abatement program is to achieve the following:

  • Properly issues permits to qualified asbestos removal contractors.
  • Collect asbestos removal permit fees to continue funding the program.
  • Inspect and monitor the asbestos abatement projects and inspect asbestos abatement project records and reports.
  • Investigate asbestos related complaints as well as unlicensed asbestos removal operations.
  • Prosecuting asbestos removal or other asbestos violations for those who fail to comply with asbestos laws and regulations.

In addition to the local permitting and regulations there are also Federal standards for asbestos removal. These standards can be found in 40 CFR part 61, Subpart M. Due to the following of these federal standards many local building departments and environmental departments have elected not to require asbestos regulation enforcement on single family homes or on a residential project containing four or fewer dwelling units. For more information and your specific requirements we recommend checking with your local building or environmental department. Absolute Home Solutions can also provide additional Asbestos regulation consultation. The Federal guidelines also set varying standards according to the size of the roof area in question.
